Apologies: course rescheduled as a one-day in-house workshop
Solar Plate is a modern photo-polymer alternative to traditional acid etching. It uses a short burst of UV light to transfer black and white or halftone images onto a plastic coated metal or mylar plate which can then be used for relief or intaglio printing.
In this one day session we will be using high contrast black and white artwork to make relief printing plates. We will also use tonal artwork to create ‘aquatint-style’ plates suitable for etching.
During the session you will see some examples of plates and the prints they can produce. You will make a timed test strip and then use the process to make a high contrast relief plate from your original artwork. You will expose, wash and then harden the plate during the morning, ready to make a relief print during the afternoon. We will also demonstrate making a half-tone plate suitable for intaglio printing.
Please read through the background notes about how Solar Plate works and look at some examples. http://www.wivenhoeprint.works/solar-plate-notes/.
